I've decided to use the Little Bear series (Minarek) and the Frog and Toad series (Lobel) as some of my readers for grade 1. My question is: how long do I spend on each book? One day per chapter, or until he can read it independently? Right now he will only read if I read a page and he reads a page, and I'm talking about much simpler books. And I always have to start, so I read the same pages and he reads the same pages.
when to change readers

We're using Little Bear right now! I put my divisions in as chapters and wanted my ds6 to read a chapter a day, only on Mondays and Tuesdays. That lasted just this week. He finished the entire book in one day! Maybe your son will love them just as much as mine and want to devour them!
I think you and him alternating pages until he is more comfortable is a great idea. I've never done that, but others have mentioned that it works and makes reading a whole book less daunting.
One question: does he have the basics of reading down (phonemes, sounding out words) and just needs to build his confidence? Or, do you think he's actually struggling with reading itself?
If it's just that he needs to build confidence and "reading endurance", the Little Bear books are wonderful readers! We also use the Pathway series (First Steps, Days Go By, & More Days Go By) for 1st grade, and they are wonderful books as well.
Hope that helps,
Lindsey

He taught himself to read. I don't know how he did that! He seems to have his phonemes down and he can sound words out. I think he just doesn't want to do it sometimes.
