Last year when we did Apologia Biology, I found several good biographies and other interesting books for my son to read along with the text. I'm looking to do the same this year for Chemistry, but I'm having trouble finding good high school/adult level books that look like they'd really be an asset to him. He's already read a number of biographies aimed at younger kids, and the fun The Story of the Periodic Table from Bethlehem Books. Surely there are some goodies out there? He is an excellent reader. Any suggestions?

You might try Crucibles: The Story of Chemistry. It follows the history of chemistry from ancient alchemy to nuclear fission through biographies of different scientists. I've read part of it and the stories are interesting.

You've probably already noticed the three at Yesterday's Classics, but I thought I'd post all the same.
"The Wonder Book of Chemistry"-Jean Fabre
'The Sciences"-Edward Holden; covers more than just chemistry.

I haven't gotten that far in the education of my children, but you always provide such thoughtful answers, I felt I wanted to try to help. I found a sight that lists several Chemistry books. I don't know about any of them, but have a look.

Also "Darwin's Black Box" by Michael Behe. This is more Biochemistry, but might work.
