   I don't know what to do about this. I've tried spending as much time with her as she wants beforehand. I've offered to let her pick out a book to add to the pile. I've tried letting her look at one book while I'm reading from Bible, history, or whatever. But for the past few weeks, ever since we started back from our short break, whenever I try to read aloud, she fusses and knocks the book out of my hand. It can take an hour to read instead of 15-20 min because  of her constant need for attention. Any ideas?

   ETA: This morning she wanted to go outside. So I let her and ds play outside. I took the books with me and started to read aloud, and she started fussing when she heard it, even though she was playing nearby.

   ETA: It's not just school time, either. I could be reading from books for fun to put on ds's library reading record.

   BTW, she doesn't consistently nap anymore, so having school during naptime isn't an option.

   Okay, couple of things come to mind:

   1.  Nap or not, she should be spending an hour in her bed/bedroom for quiet time daily. All my children do this, ages 9, 5, 4, 2, 1.  Even if they do not sleep they need the quiet space to recharge.  You may need to start this with 15 minutes and work up to an hour or more.  Once that habit is in place you can use some of the time to read aloud.

   2. Her behavior (hitting the book and fussing) are still not okay, even for a 2yo.  I suggest separation as a first resort if simply telling her no hitting doesn't work.  If all she does is hit the book separate her from you and the book (on the other side of a baby gate, for instance).  If she fusses and will not stop, separation to her own quiet space (bedroom) is probably what she needs.  We always tell our children "You are welcome to whine, cry, complain, or grump.  But the only one who want to listen to you do that is your bed/pillow.  Go to your room until you are done."  And they do.  :) 

    

   It's an interesting age, isn't it?  Each 2 year old is so different, and they all find new ways to challenge mommy's authority.  (Speaking from experience here...sigh.)  It sounds like you're doing great at filling her love/time tank before trying to do other things, so it really comes down to a discipline/obedience issue.

   Have you tried a snack?  My two year can be the same way sometimes.  Usually a snack will help.  Keeps her busy and quiet for a while. :-)  Also, sometimes i let her rinse plastic cups in the sink and that will occupy her during reading time for a good 15 min.  She stands on a chair at the sink and rinses them...fills them up and dumps them out again. Sometimes there is a little mess, and sometimes we even have to change her clothes, but she is getting suprisingly good at keeping it all in the sink.  LOL HTH! :)

   I do agree that she needs to be trained that this is NOT okay. Separation would probably be the most effective since she is looking for attention and that would be the exact opposite.

   Another thought is to train her on blanket time. Simply lay out a blanket, give her some toys/books and expect her to stay on the blanket for an allotted amount of time. Fifteen minutes is a good starting time with working up to an hour. I would recommend training for this during a non-school time though so you can give it your full attention. Maybe sit on the couch and "read" a book (one that you can put down quickly to train her). Once trained it comes in handy for a multitude of times: school, Dr office visits, friends houses, etc.

   Be consistent, persistant and hang in there!
