I'm working with my 1st grade daughter on addition problems with MathUSee. She did excellent on adding by 0's and 1's. But now we are having trouble understanding adding by 2's. We are on week 3 now when it only took the one week for adding by 0's and 1's.
Is this normal for children to not get this at first? I know they have to understand the concrete before they can understand the abstract. We work on the blocks daily and after a week of the worksheets, I've added games that we play so we aren't doing worksheets over and over. I have her build it, write it, and say it. Sometimes she forgets the 1's and we just mastered them 2 weeks ago. I also printed out the 0's, 1's and 2's addition facts for her to see during meals. And she plays games on the computer. lol
How long did it take for your children to understand and it clicked and they could move on again? Just wondering how long it could take for her to get it. Weeks...months?
Any ideas on what to do to help her to understand what it means to add by 2? I try to show her that for 1's it's just adding one more or counting up 1. So for two's it's going up 2 more. We also sing the Addtion Songs from MathUSee and she can count by 2 up to 10.
TIA!
