We measure EVERY book, movie, song, etc. against Philippians 4:8.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."

If it doesn't pass that "test" then we don't use the material.

You are what you eat (or read, in this case) -

A quick opinion...my daughter was reading these books a few years ago & I noticed a change in her attitude/behavior...she seemed so down...

I suggested she put them away and read something else for a time. Her attitude perked up and those books have not come into our home again.

I have not read the books, but I did see part??? or maybe I waited out the whole movie??? And if the book is ANYthing like the movie, I would say that these are NOT something I would want my children observing. The theme of the movie was just SO dark. There are so many wholesome alternatives where the heroes may encounter hardship, but not on such a perpetual, unrealistic, catastophic basis. If you do a search for book recoomendations for boys on the forum, you'll find lots of great suggestions.

The Lemony Snicket books (A series of Unfortunate Events)

are written in an interesting way, that keep my sons intrest. As I read aloud, I did not like what was happening to these children.

Not sure if it was my own emotions or natural instincts that this book may not be what we want to read for leisure.

A friend started reading the book to the children and my son enjoyed it and wanted me to finish reading.

Has anyone read these books or have an opinion of them?
