Well, we read Greg's Microscope, a Science I Can Read book, used in Sonlight. My kids and I were excited to get out the microscope to view what Greg viewed: salt, sugar, flour, dust, hair, leaves, onion, etc. But mine is a cheap one by Mead that I purchased at Walmart years ago. I've hardly used it and could not get the light to work, and messed with it and still could not figure how to repair it. It was very inexpensive, but I was hoping for them to see something. I am now looking into a magiscope, but do I need all the lenses? Can I just get the basic for now to see these things, at 20X ? What do I really need here? It can go from 5 X to 400 X. That is quite a range. I don't have much money to use of school right now either. Could I maybe find one used and it work just fine? Is this something worth spending the kids' Christmas money on from their grandmother? Should I look more at the Sonlight microscope or another rather than the magiscope? I'm sure the kids would love to look at insects and flowers and more in it too.

Good for you! As someone who loves science I think a microscope is an essential tool in the home school.

You didn't mention what your daughter would be using the microscope for. Does she want one that will allow her to see greater detail on objects such as rocks or feathers? Or is she interested in looking at the fascinating world of microscopic organisms such as those found in pond water? Stereoscopes are designed for looking at larger objects in more detail. Microscopes are designed to look at the microscopic world in more detail. Each device can be used for both but with limited success. If you want a microscope that will be used for the rest of her schooling then I recommend buying a regular microscope rated at a high school to college quality.Home Science Tools has a good selection and pretty good prices: http://www.hometrainingtools.com/microscopes-accessories/c/10/ .

Dr. Jay Wile of Apologia recommends either the micrscope from Sonlight or this one from Christianbook: http://www.christianbook.com/apologia-biology-microscope-131/pd/161012?event=WL&item_code=WW

to last thorugout the high school years.

We love our Brock Magiscope. It is simple and tough and can be taken into the field as it doesn't require electricity. It is about $125 but we'll have it a lifetime.

I'm thinking of buying our dd10 a microscope for her birthday this summer. Does anyone know of one that is reasonably priced that works well?
