My children are positively bored by this book. I don't know if it's the language, or just the letters in general. I'm considering dropping it & finding something else to read in it's place. If they aren't enjoying the book, should I be forcing it on them? They are 10, 8, 6. My son read part of it alone before we started using it as a family resource.

I just found the nicest picture book of the Christmas Story I've ever seen at the library! It has lovely pictures - ones that are real looking and not cartoonish, AND words right from the Bible! I was thrilled. It's taken from Luke (KJV) and also is easy to read, I think even the littles would sit thru it. Anyhow, I'm excited and hope it may help someone else with small children. Here it is:

The Christmas Story: From the gospel according to St. Luke from the King James Verison
Pictures by James Bernardin

Hi there, :-)

What living books do you like to read to your children about winter happenings in nature and hibernating for both animals and insects? My daughter, age 6, was asking about such things. Thank you very much for any help!

Just wondering if anyone has read the books from Salem Ridge Press. They are having an awesome 40% off sale on church history. Not sure I want to invest in them unless I hear that they are good living books. Does anyone have experience with them? Funny, I was just looking at these a few days ago, and now they are on sale. I am always up for getting more books for the home library . . . if they are worth it and good.

I have a 4 year old and I am wondering how many books at a time should I be reading from to her a day? we are doing kindergarten this year. We are reading from Winnie-the-pooh {1 page a day} and Aesop's Fables for Children: Includes a Read-and-Listen CD {1 story a day}, should I be reading a living geography and a living History book to her each day also? Dont want to confuse her.

Has anyone read these by Mike Graf? I see one on Amazon and the sample "look inside" looks like it would be a great living book. But, I wonder if these books get into the issue of creation vs. evolution or not. There is a book on each of the National Parks. I may go ahead and try the one that is a bargain book, but I wondered if anyone else has read them and has an opinion to share. Thanks.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share some fun, free finds I've stumbled across online recently:

Perhaps you've browsed the Handbook of Nature Study blog and found the challenges a little overwhelming, or maybe your kids are still pretty little and need something gentler, or maybe you just have a hard time getting IN to the whole nature study thing (I am all of the above!). You may want to check out the new monthly newsletter she is offering - one of the features is a printable study grid that has 8 super simple nature study ideas related to a theme. Easy peasy! Here is the link to the September one (I think you may have to subscribe to her blog to get them after this month, however.) http://handbookofnaturestudy.blogspot.com/2011/09/handbook-of-nature-study-september.html

Free lesson plans to go along with some of the "Getting to know the world's latest artists" books - I'm planning to use a couple of these ideas this coming year (artist study is also not my thing...): http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2011/06/worlds-greatest-artists-unit-study.html

And if you like downloading free vintage books, this is a very well organized site - mostly links to Google books and Gutenburg - but organized by topic and age level http://freehomeschoolinglibrar.blogspot.com/

Happy reading, all!

I am looking for living, biographical introductions to various hymn writers. My idea is to use them to introduce children in our girl's club at church to godly role models. Reading a whole book on a person would be great, but I only have a few minutes each week for this purpose. My thought was a short bit about the writer one week followed by several weeks of singing songs by that writer. The only short hymn sories I have found are extremely dry and factual. Does anyone have recommendations for such material, or other ideas? I am only a small part of a club night, but I am always looking for ways to insert CM ideas, um, pretty much anywhere and everywhere I go. I do not have children of my own, yet have worked with students, watching the CM methods breathe life back into their education and childhood!

I'm new here :) We've only done 1 year of HS so far. Last year we did Rod & Staff because I was nervous and decided to jump in with a boxed curriculum. I then started going to a Charlotte Mason support group in my HS co-op and thought, "This is what I imagined homeschooling to be!". So this year we are going with the CM method and I'm really excited! Today, I sat for hours and worked on pulling together our curriculum for next month (totally last minute!) and I was going to do Apologia for the Elementary years (my kids are 8, almost 6 and 4). But then I got to reading on the discussion forum and went back to my first love, nature studies. Well, at least I think I love them...haven't really done them yet! LOL Anyway, I'm just looking over ALL the stuff and wondering, where do I begin? I love the look of the living books, such as the Burgess books, the Among My People, etc. So how exactly do you incorporate these living books into nature studies? I have the "Handbook of Nature Study" blogspot book marked and will read that more tomorrow (my eyes are getting blurry and cross right now).

I imagine nature studies consisting of us going outside, the kids exploring, or going for walks, geocaching, going to the beaches, etc. So, when it comes to the living books, do you add them in when you find something in your outdoor time that corresponds with it, or do you read the book and then search out something outdoors to go with the book...or neither?! lol

I plan on doing a nature notebook for my 8 year old, but should I start my almost 6 year old doing one or would she be too young? I know she will want to do what her big sis is doing :)

Thank you!

We made a detour to our local art museum a couple of weeks back instead of heading to the park as we had intended. We were wonderfully surprised to be there when a new exhibit opened. However, my favorite part of the night was the books I brought home from the museum shop. I just thought I'd share.

These have lovely illustrations and will be terrific additions to our home library. They are short picture books, but I learned quite a lot myself.
