havefaithplease,

Yes, I did know that the Pathway readers go up further, even to 5th grade, I think. It's just that he zooms through those in such a short time that I know we would run out of reading material in a few weeks. I'll check out the Billy and Blaze books since they seem to be so popular. Surely our library will have them.

Thanks everyone,

Lindsey

Do you know that the Pathway Readers go up farther than More Days Go By? Next is Busy Times, then More Busy Times. My ds loves them. They are chapter books, each chapter is about 8-10 pages long. So if he liked the other pathway readers you might want to continue along with them. They are the grade 2 books. More challenging words are in the books. And less pictures I think.

I do second the Billy and Blaze books. We have two of them, and they are well liked here! Also My Father's Dragon. (some words might be a bit difficult).

Henry and Mudge by Cynthia Rylant (might be considered twaddly, but worth a look)

Billy and Blaze books by CW Anderson

Thanks, Kim!

I just e-mailed my librarian with these titles, so hopefully she'll have a big stack of books for me soon! I know my problem is a great one to have, but I just wasn't expecting it so soon. ha!

How about some of the higher level I Can Read books......like Clara and the Bookwagon, Josefina Story Quilt, Sam the Minuteman, George the Drummer Boy, Small Wolf, Finding Providence, First Flight, Prairie School.....We've also enjoyed the Ready to Read series of history related titles. (John Adams Speaks for Freedom, Amelia Earhart: More than a Flier, Helen Keller and the Big Storm....)

Next Spring an Oriole, Balto and the Great Race.....

When my daughter started on chapter books, she REALLY enjoyed the Boxcar Children books. Maybe he would like those too.

Some of the Clyde Robert Bulla titles.....Riding the Pony Express, Secret Valley

If I think of others I'll post some more....

Hope that helps,

I've posted something similar to this before, but I need to ask again.

My ds6 is quickly approaching the "finished w/ beginner readers" phase. He is currently reading the Pathway readers (Days Go By and More Days Go By), and he loves them. He always wants to read multiple stories in one sitting. We're also reading the Little Bear books, but he is going through them with way too much ease. We've done Biscuit (cough, cough) and Dick and Jane (a long time ago).

What's next??

I don't feel comfortable with handing him a copy of Black Beauty and telling him to 'go for it'. He does still make mistakes here and there (don't we all?), but I really feel like he's ready for something more challenging. We're definitely past learning phonics, as he can usually look at a word that he's never seen and say it correctly after a try or two. I'm having a hard time keeping him supplied with good books to read on his own.

Any suggestions? Any good titles that I can turn him loose with?

Thanks!

My first grader uses the Beehive Reader from All About Spelling. It correlates with the All About Spelling program, but can be used independently, also.

http://www.all-about-spelling.com/beehive-reader-1.html

Also, I like the books by Nora Gaydos. Some might consider it twaddle, but they are awesome for phonics.

I agree about those particular readers; they have good messages. I highly recommend the Elson Readers with or without the workbooks:

http://www.lcbcbooks.com/elson_readers.htm

and definitely Reading Literature Readers from Yesterdays Classics under the Literature tab: http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com

Those can be obtained free at Baldwin Project. Both of these selections are replete with wonderful poety, folk tales and classic stories. I use them both for narration.

Well, we are at the end of Days Go By now. The vocabulary builds on itself and is challenging with plenty of review. The primer was very easy for my dd also, but it was good for her to gain confidence. There are some others that are free at the Baldwin Project. They are recommended by Ambleside. I didn't like them as much as Pathway, but you can look at all of them before you buy the books or just print them out.

McGuffey's are another choice, too.

HTH!

As I have browsed through the Curriculum Guide, I have noticed that the only suggestions for grade 1 are First Steps, Days Go By, and More Days Go By. As far as I can tell, First Steps is way too basic for my ds6. I think I'm going to purchase the other two books, since they look a little more challenging.

I was wondering if you all could give me some other suggestions for beginner reading books that will help build my son's vocabulary, as well as his endurance to read longer passages. The only things I can find in bookstores are twaddle.

He can read Dr. Seuss books like Green Eggs and Ham, Hop on Pop, and The Cat in the Hat really well. His grandmother gave him all the Biscuit books for Christmas, and he has enjoyed those (although I feel they are a bit twaddle-ish).

To clarify, I am looking for books he can read on his own, not books for me to read to him.

Thanks!
