My son,12, is needing a good book for his downtime. For those of you with boys, what are they enjoying?

BTW, my son is an average level reader. I prefer to give him "less challenging" books for his relaxing alone time, but I still want him to have something worthwhile.

My 5 children are 7 and under, and we love reading together. I can't even remember all the books I've read to them while they eat lunch, and after lunch:) The other day, I realized that my first two have heard many wonderful living books, while the younger three have heard them also, but just small parts, because they weren't interested. Then I was overwhelmed thinking of trying to go back and read those books again, while still finding time to have other read alouds for the older two. I still read shorter books throughout the day with the younger three, but not the ones like Mr. Popper's Penguins, Burgess Bird Book, etc. How do I remember which books to read and when, if that made sense? My oldest is 7 and reads well independently, but he and his sister (6) still really enjoy our time with the books out loud. Thanks!

Have any of you read this entire series? I am currently on Anne's House of Dreams and have lost interest. I would like to finish the series but I'm having to force myself to read it at the moment. Did anyone else find a lull in it? Did anyone make it to the end and are glad they did? I guess I need a little encouragement to keep going. ;)

Hi all!

I just read the SCM book about the Way of the Will. One chapter suggests reading living books to inspire children. It specifically says not to get books that are overt in moral instruction (for this) but books to serve as an example to inspire to.

Even for myself there are certain books that make me want to be a better person, to make better choices such as Les Miserables, Villette, Jane Eyre, Anne of Green Gables...

Do you know of books that exemplify goodness/wisdom/character, maybe even some that are gender-specific? So, again, not a book that says to be good but one that shows what good looks like. Books that would give our children people to look up to and aspire to be like.

Thanks a lot!
Dana
(my DC are little but the choices don't have to be limited by age. Thanks!)

Hi there,

I ran across this special on ebooks from yesterday's classics (essentially 225 ebooks for $99. This link says $149 but I saw an ad for $99 but just don't have the link)

http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/o/ebooks.php

We haven't started year one yet fully, so my questions are: are these books you would read for school work or just leisure? Are they good character books? Are these all just books from google books that I could download for free? I have never ordered anything from yesterday's classics so any opinion on them and/or this package would be fabulous. Thank you! :-)

My children are positively bored by this book. I don't know if it's the language, or just the letters in general. I'm considering dropping it & finding something else to read in it's place. If they aren't enjoying the book, should I be forcing it on them? They are 10, 8, 6. My son read part of it alone before we started using it as a family resource.

Can anyone recommend any good picture books for winter? I need some good light reading for my DD-7 and almost DS-4 1/2. We have The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, and the only other book I found on this site rec'd was Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton. We just read A New Coat for Anna last week. Thanks!

Ralph Henry Barbour wrote sports fiction in the early 1900s. Anyone heard of him and have an opinion?

I think my son would like some sports related material, and this might could be a somewhat historical considering the old dates.

Just read thru all 19 pages of posts under Living books here, and looked at all the booklists listed. Found some good ones, and many we have or have borrowed from the library, of the most commonly found ones. My question is, does anyone have some absolute favorites that they would like to add to their home library? Special Christmas ones, seasonal, animal stories, etc. that have a great story and wonderful pictures? (right now, our boys are 6 and 4 but we enjoy all kinds of read-alouds, including chapter books, and have read extensively from all the science picture books lists, like Jim Arnosky's, etc.)

Hi all,

I've been browsing some old books online today (how fab is the internet?!) and I came across this site that I haven't seen mentioned before so I thought I'd share. Apologies if it's already well known.

http://ufdc.ufl.edu/juv

Unfortunately I can't see a way to get them on to a kindle at the moment, but I've already found some great books on there including lots of biographies.

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but a friend shared this site with me.

You can read books online. I saw some great ones, especially under classics. I'm still browsing, but it looks like they are mainly for younger kids. Just wanted to pass this along as it looks like a neat site.
